Aim for 21

Blackjack (sometimes also called Black Jack) is a game where you have to win against... the bank! Isn't that everyone's dream?
Whichever of the two of you gets 21, or the hand closest to 21, wins the bet.

The 5 main principles of Blackjack:

  • The players (a maximum of 7) play against "the bank", represented by the croupier.
  • The player who gets 21, or the hand closest to 21, wins the equivalent of his stake,
  • If the bank gets 21, or has the hand closest to 21, they win the bets.
  • If a player gets more than 21, he loses the round.
  • If the bank (the croupier) gets more than 21 points, all the players still in play (having less than 21) automatically win, whatever their cards are.

How to play

1. Start by making a bet
In Blackjack, you bet before playing: to do this, place the sum of your choice on the table, in the space provided for this purpose.

2. The bank deals the cards
The bank gives you two cards. The other players also receive two cards. The bank receives a single card and turns it over so that it is visible.

3. Assessing your hand
That's it, you have you two cards in front of you, the game starts. You must calculate the value of your hand. And decide if you can beat the bank.

To do this you have to add together the values of your two cards. Don't worry, it's simple to understand and remember:
-    Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 points.
-    The Ace is worth either 11 or 1, you decide.
-    A 3 is worth 3, a 4 is worth 4, a 5 is worth 5, and so on.

Pretty logical, right? Here's a real example, to practice: you receive a Jack (J) and a 9. Your hand is worth 19.

Blackjack: you have an Ace and a face card, this hand is called "Blackjack". It's the best possible hand. Anyone with this hand wins the round immediately, unless the bank also has Blackjack.

4. Asking for further cards

Once you know your hand, you can ask the bank for as many extra cards as you wish. Of course, the only aim is to get as close as possible to 21... without going over!

5. The bank draws one or several extra cards and shows their cards

The aim of the bank is to reach a minimum of 17 points and a maximum of 21. Then they show their cards to all the players. Now you know the hand that you must beat.

6. And the winner is…

The winner or winners are therefore the players around the table who:

  • have a face card and an Ace, the famous Blackjack - they receive 1.5 times their bet.
  • are the closest to 21 - they receive the value of their bet.

If no-one beats the bank, it keeps the bets.

Jack's advice

When the bank's first card is a 4, 5 or a 6, statistically the bank has a bigger chance of going over 21. In this case, it's not always necessary to get close to 21 to win.

Taking it further

Blackjack is a card game that's easy to learn. Everything will become even clearer once you're comfortably sitting around one of Evian Casino's Blackjack tables, with a delicious cocktail.

Insurance (side-betting):  If the croupier's first card is an Ace, you can "insure" yourself against the croupier possibly having Blackjack by putting half of your initial bet in the "insurance" space. If the bank gets a Blackjack, you win your insurance, which is paid out to you at twice its value. If the croupier doesn't get a Blackjack, you lose the sum placed in insurance.

Doubling down: Immediately after receiving your first two cards, you have the possibility to double your initial bet. However, if you choose to double down, you can only draw one extra card.

Splitting : If your first two cards are of the same value, you can split your hand into two separate ones, but you must place an extra bet, the same value as your initial bet, for your second hand. Then, you play normally, except if you have split a pair of Aces: in this case, you can only draw one extra card.

Casino Culture

When a Blackjack player wins… four Oscars!

The film Rain Man, which came out in 1988, tells the story of an autistic person gifted with an almost supernatural memory. A fraudster takes advantage of this genius' weakness and takes him on a crawl of the Blackjack tables around the country... with the aim of cheating. It's one of my favourite films... I won't tell you the ending, but the way it ended for the film-makers was definitely a win. Rain Man won three Oscars, and the lead actor, Dustin Hoffman, also won one for his historic performance.
