The game in a nusthell

Classic reel slots are commonly called slot machines and are also known as one-armed bandits. During my travels around the world, I've been able to test all sorts of different-looking machines, but the principle of the game always remains the same: put a a banknote or gaming ticket into the machine, spin 3 or 5 reels on which symbols are displayed, and try to get a winning combination.

You almost already know how to play!

Jack's advice: pick your machine well!

This applies for all games... but particularly to slot machines. I advise you to have two criteria. First of all, the feeling. Machines are designed with different themes, looks or music. So go for the one which you're drawn to!

And, the second criteria is more pragmatic: each machine has its pay table, jokers and bonuses displayed. This is a good way to choose which one you'll spend a couple of games on.

Casino Culture

Do you know why we call slot machines one-armed bandits?

Let's start with the obvious part. They have a kind of lever, just one, on the side. We call that the arm. And since they only have one, we called that 'one-armed'.
However, experts have trouble agreeing where the “bandit” word came from. I'm going to give you my version.

These machines were invented in San Francisco, at the end of the 19th century, right when the "wild west" was in full swing. The law on paying out of bets, which obliges casinos to pay out a certain number of winning bets, didn't yet exist... So perhaps some were less generous than what we have these days... true bandits!
