The game in a nutshell!

French roulette and English roulette are casino games where a gaming wheel is set spinning, then a ball is thrown onto it. Players bet on the number on which the ball will land.
It is the ultimate game of chance!

French roulette

How the game is played

French roulette uses a gaming wheel and a table layout for bets. The wheel is divided into compartments, numbered from 1 to 36 plus a single zero (0) compartment, which is green. The other compartments are alternately coloured in red or black.

Place your bets!

When it comes to betting, there are several options:

Even money bets

These are the basic type of roulette bets. You can bet either on a colour (red or black), or wager that the number that comes up will be even or odd. You can also bet that the number that comes up will be in the first half of the numbers (between 1 and 18 or “low”) or in the second half (between 19 and 36 or “high”). In all cases, a single bet pays 1x the stake.

BE WARNED: When the zero comes up, an even money bet loses half its value (the amount is said to be “En prison”). You then have a choice: either withdraw the remaining stake, or leave it and hope to recover it on the next spin (at the risk of losing it permanently).

Outside bets

So, let’s start to get to grips with the subtleties. Nothing too complicated for the moment, rest assured! There are two main types of outside bet: the dozen bet and the column bet.

The dozen bet

Since the roulette wheel goes up to 36, the numbers are divided into 3 sets of 12 numbers (1 to 12, 13 to 24, and 25 to 36).When you bet on a dozen, you’re wagering that the ball will land on one of the numbers within your chosen set.

You can bet on a single dozen (e.g. 1 to 12) or on a split dozen, i.e. two adjacent groups of twelve numbers (e.g. 1 to 12 and 13 to 25). A single dozen bet pays 2x the wager, and a split dozen pays 0.5x the wager.

The column bet

When you bet on a column, you are wagering that the ball will land on one of the three columns of numbers on the table layout. As with the dozen bet, you can bet on a single column or on a split column, i.e. two adjacent columns. A single column bet pays 2x the wager, and a split column pays 0.5x the wager.

Inside bets

Here I have some good news and some bad news for you. The good news is that inside bets offer the highest payouts at roulette. The bad news is that they are also the riskiest. Admit it – there wouldn’t be much enjoyment if it was that easy!

Let’s take a closer look at these bets:

Sextet/six-line bet
This is when you bet on two adjacent horizontal lines of three numbers. The sextet 5x the wager.

Square bet
This is when you bet on four numbers that form a square on the roulette table. The square pays 8x the wager.

Street bet
This is when you bet on three consecutive numbers forming a horizontal line on the roulette table. The street bet pays 11x the wager.

Split bet
This is when you bet on two adjacent numbers on the roulette table. The split bet pays 17x the wager.

Straight bet
This is when you bet on… a single number! It takes a lot of nerve to make a bet like this! A straight bet pays 35x the stake.

Jack’s advice

If you’re a beginner, I’d urge you to start with even money bets only. This will let you gradually acquaint yourself with the game.

See you soon at the Evian Casino!

Jack

Rien ne va plus, no more bets!

You can continue to bet until the croupier says the traditional “Rien ne va plus” – no more bets! From then on, no more bets can be placed, removed or moved. No more bets: the croupier turns the wheel and spins the ball.

The suspense is brief yet intense, ending when the ball finally stops… revealing whether your intuition was right or not!

English roulette

How the game is played :

English roulette works to the same principle as French roulette, but with a few minor differences, which I explain here:

  • In English roulette, each player has their own colour of chip to make it easier to keep track of the bets. The player designates the value of the chip upon purchase. You can change the value of your chips during the game, as long as you change their colour. You can convert your coloured chips into chips of a different value at the end of the game (or when you decide to leave the game).
  • The “En Prison” rule does not apply when the ball lands on 0.

Culture Casino

A 1-in-3-billion chance

On 14th July 2000 at the iconic Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, something astonishing occurred: the roulette wheel landed on the number 7… six times in a row! An incredibly rare event with odds estimated at one in three billion.

The law of series? Synchronicity? Just a lucky number? Call it what you want!
